Do we forget?

You often hear people say “oh, just forget it and move on.”  And yes, for some situations that may be the correct thing to do.  If someone is fixated on something another person does (they think) to them, that would be the best answer absolutely no doubt about that.

But do we REALLY forget things?  Well, my husband could tell you a load of stories of the things I have forgotten over the 14 years± we have been together.  And you probably are well aware of having put something in a “special place” and when the time came for you to use it, can you find it?  I found a card and book I had bought five years before once!  I wonder how many times it’s happened to you?

You see, there are many different reasons we forget things.  For example, sometimes we get sick, or events take over our lives that take precedence to whatever you were considering doing.  Or maybe, well, anything really.

I think it was Churchill who coined the phrase during the Second World War (or he used them from someone else – I don’t remember) LEST WE FORGET.  And it was to remember the fallen during the war and the atrocities that were committed and the fact that we really DO NOT WANT another world war.

And something that is life transforming like marriage, having a baby, losing a baby, bad births, moving house, the firsts….well, we don’t forget.  Of course if it is something bad you can TRY to forget it, but it underlines your life and you can’t.

Life is for living and I believe we need to be loving, caring, compassionate people who are there for others while not forgetting to take care of themselves and uphold the values that make us better people.  I don’t mean you have to be perfect, but I know you will move on and the timing of it may be different to what either you or someone else would like, but that’s ok.  It will happen when it does at the RIGHT time.
