Commitment

It’s a strange word actually, isn’t it?  You can be committed to a place, person, idea, book, country….all sorts of things.  And some of them aren’t the kind of thing that you would ever consider committing to.  I have always felt that commitment is important but it needs to be in the right place.  So, I guess the next question is, how do you know where that is?

Well, let me start with the fact that I am committed to the Royal family and the work they do in the world and the difference they make to billions of lives.  Yes, ok, there are some things they do that I DON’T like, but that’s ok.  The WORK they do is important so I would want them to continue to perform the public services necessary.  They understand that the work they do comes above other things, but they try to fit it within their lives and families so that they get done what they need to.

I suppose you could say I am committed to writing.  Yes, I write with an ipad mostly, although I do have some beautiful pens I can use if I want to write on paper.  Mostly I journal with the pens and everything else goes on the ipad.  However, with the phone in my hand, I can write wherever I wish because I take it everywhere I go.  Yes, it’s a bit slower but serviceable.  Yes, this post is being created on the ipad.

Actually I guess you could say that I am committed to inspiration.  I use it wherever I find it and if it’s possible to share the inspiration as well as what is written, I do.  And being inspired is like my senses being touched by something (it can impact any sense) and once I have it, the die is cast.  I cannot but use it and take it to lead me on and up towards the final nuances of it all and I have wrung out every last drop of it.  At that point, the post or poem or part of book or whatever it is, can be shared.

Another thing many people are committed to is religion.  There are many different religions in the world and not all people in one particular religion commit to everything else somebody else does.  People from many different religions raised an outcry of the atrocities of 9/11.  It was a shocking and horrific sight that changed the world from that day on, it impacted people all over the globe.  The people who did it were radicals, but strongly believed in what they were doing and were committed to carrying out the tasks that day.  So you can be committed to a good thing….or a bad thing inside a good one or vice versa.

I guess the biggest things I am committed to is my family and religion.  I also believe in  encouraging and helping others.  These form the backbone of what I do and are the consideration in decisions I make.  And there is so much we can do to help the world around us.  Do I get everything right in my own commitment? No.  But that’s not the consideration.  The fact is we grow and change and our ideals change, but the commitment to the idea of how it plays out differs from one individual to another or even one household to another.  Your husband/partner/whoever shares your life will see it playing out differently in their minds to yours and that’s ok.  Take a moment, step away, and consider, are they still upholding the same idea to mine?  Then there’s nothing you shouldn’t be able to work out together.
