Sickness and Autism
Oh yes, I wanted to talk to you about sickness or illness and someone on the spectrum. Now it could be possible that they don’t have sensory issues but I must admit that Johnathan does.
And when someone has sensory issues, when they get sick, they don’t like the fact that their body feels different. They don’t understand it and at first he would try and describe it with words he knew but as he has gotten older he is getting better at knowing what’s wrong and how to say it.
Now I know he’s still at the stage of starting to understand his body and learning how to express it. But I will admit that he is not the only one. Sometimes I find I’m not feeling great and have no idea of what is wrong.. And I have to tell the doctor I don’t know. And I am sure it has happened with you, too. I think the funniest time with me when I had to lurch from foot to foot as far as I could get them apart with my legs and it turned out to be a nasty ear infection. Who would have guessed?
I don’t know if you have heard of black and white thinking, but it is where you see something one way or other and there are literally NO shades of grey. Wrong is wrong and right is right.
And when they go into this mindset, it can be extremely hard to impossible to get them to change their minds because it has to make sense to them! I have found this sort of thing quite difficult to deal with because I don’t always seem to be able to find that elusive piece of information that would help Johnathan.
TREASURE
Sensory issues can be helped, just need a calm head to help them.
