Beauty is…
Have you ever thought or heard that something is almost or actually is too beautiful for words? People use the phrase (I think) generally because what they are looking at has touched them in a way they feel they can’t describe. The amount of beauty is nearly beyond expression.
I find I think or say this generally at scenery outside or sunrises or sunsets. The varying glow of the sun beautifies it all. My creative soul loves to see them whether outside, on a computer, or photograph or something similar. I also love to see how artists and sculptors or other creative forms of expression demonstrate that pulling deep inside them and display it for the world to see.
When I write a poem that’s connected to art, my aim is to bring out the beauty that I see within it through the written word. It may take the form of poetry or prose and it doesn’t really matter which. All I want to do is bring it to more people so that they too can enjoy what I have been enjoying. If it moves them to some personal creativity, that’s even better!
On seeing something too beautiful for words, how on earth can you demonstrate it to another person? But will everyone understand your interpretation of the wordless wonder as you gaze at something so amazing? No. We don’t all see things in the same way. And that’s ok. The creatives in this world need to have something they can bring out connected to whatever beauty they discover.
We are all individuals, and our expression of that beauty beyond words will not ever be the same. And that’s ok. In the courthouse you can have a dozen people at the same incident and they will all describe something different - not because they are lying but because their focus is on different things, based on their past experiences.
Beauty is a joy that keeps on giving. It has a place all to itself. Looking around, you can tell what begins to move and stir you. But whatever it is that you discover is almost or actually too beautiful for words in something you should hold onto. It gives you a sense of continuity and peace with wonder inside because what you see is almost perfect. And that’s something I believe makes a big difference in our lives.
One more thing I would love to mention about beauty being too beautiful for words is also expressed when you have your child in your arms. I have held two of my babies and looked down on them in wonder and amazement as I engraved on my heart the beauty almost too deep for words. The first time I looked deep into Johnathan’s eyes was an experience I will never forget. And the one thing I always regretted with Natalie was that although I saw and held her, because she was stillborn, I never saw her eyes. I looked at her beauty and marvelled at it, but couldn’t see her eyes.
You know what, though? When you see something that IS almost too or actually IS too beautiful for words, use what lies within you and try to express it in your own creative way. Don’t be held back by the fact you can’t produce that perfectly. As you do it more and more, you’ll find you grow in your ability to reproduce it. The good thing about doing that is it will bring you satisfaction, achievement and joy and you could practise mindfulness or breathing or something similar while creating something beautiful.
