World Autism Day

Do you know, I have felt really bad because I missed it!  It was actually yesterday and I just didn’t clock the fact.  My brain and body have been so mixed up this last week, I just didn’t realise what the date was.

So, it’s happy world autism awareness day and autism awareness week that happens every year when April starts.  And I think it’s really important because people SHOULD be aware of autism and how it changes the thinking so that they see the world in black and white.

I was talking to my therapist and we were talking about how people on the spectrum have a unique view of the world around them.  Personally I have never seen a child on the spectrum or heard of one that doesn’t have SOME measure of anxiety.  I think it’s because their perspective in life isn’t like a neurotypical child.

There are some people who will tell you that so-and-so in my family is a little bit autistic.  No, they are not.  Autism changes the pattern of the brain.

People on the spectrum often don’t look others in the eye – not because they are being rude or anything like that.  They are doing it because of how overwhelming it is for them to look into your eyes.

I know that my son wants to be accepted and for others to understand what he goes through.  I also comprehend that it’s going to be extremely hard for them to do that.

My plea would be if a child is behaving differently, and the parent appears to be struggling, please don’t judge them as you don’t know what is happening in their homes and lives.

Now I have told you a little bit about autism, I hope I make sense and if you want to discuss anything I have written, please do contact me.
