The Great Unknown
When I think of the Great Unknown, it always takes me back to the world of pre, during and post Tudor times. I mean, in the end Christopher Columbus got the money for his travels from the King and Queen of Spain - Ferdinand and Isabella.
But what would later people think of as the Great Unknowns? Well, the areas that weren’t yet conquered or explored. Africa, Australia, Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland/Iceland and large swathes of America too.
Could there be those who WANTED to discover these places and explore? These brave souls gave no thought as to life or limb but dove deeply into the discovery of this world that was literally (or appeared to be) waiting for them.
Now, of course, we don’t only have the reality of knowing a lot about the world around us, but people have been up into space and seen the world from there.
And we have so many books and films and documentaries on space and fantasies surrounding it and other worlds and species out there.
So the Great Unknown now is drawn to the skies and galaxies and moons and everything “out there.” I think the world will always need some kind of Great Unknown.
People are highly creative and can draw inspiration from our world here and now to create another. And this can, and has been and will be, our reaching out to whatever Great Unknown we can see,
